Mahfouz adaptation: tracking Callum’s journey

A coherent design could track Callum’s tragic journey by changing colour, intensity, sound texture or scale as the story moves from childhood intimacy towards political violence. This is one possible through-line, not a prescribed design.

Phase 1: The Private Beach

The play opens with Callum (a Nought) and Sephy (a Cross) as childhood friends meeting secretly on a private beach. They are naive to the brutal reality of their segregated world, imagining they can simply run away together without consequence.

🎭 Eduqas Staging Note

This is one of the only times the technical design should feel naturalistic. Use soft, warm amber lighting and gentle acoustic soundscapes (tide rolling) to highlight their natural, innocent bond before society forces them apart.
