The Examiner's Focus: The Tragic Arc

Don’t just recount plot. WJEC/Eduqas rewards students who track how a character’s status, relationships and physical/vocal choices change across the play. Show how acting, direction and design visibly shift from Phase 1 to Phase 3 so Macbeth’s decline is readable to the audience.

The Trajectory of Decline

Macbeth’s five acts can be played as three clear performance phases. Every choice you make in the exam should match the phase your extract belongs to.

⚔️
Phase 1: Ambition & Regicide (Acts 1-2)

The Noble Warrior Corrupted

Macbeth begins as a fiercely loyal, upright war hero. However, a prophecy from three Witches ignites his fatal flaw: ambition. Manipulated by his calculating wife, Lady Macbeth, he murders King Duncan in his sleep. Performance focus: Actors should show the internal conflict. Macbeth is upright but hesitant, while Lady Macbeth uses close, invasive proxemics to assert physical and psychological dominance over him.

👑
Phase 2: Paranoia & Tyranny (Act 3)

The Blood-Soaked Crown

Now King, Macbeth is consumed by paranoia that he will lose his stolen throne. He orders the murder of his best friend, Banquo. The climax occurs at the Banquet, where Macbeth hallucinates Banquo's bloody ghost. Performance focus: Macbeth's physicality should deteriorate — hunched posture, erratic pacing, darting eyes. The marital power dynamic flips; Lady Macbeth becomes isolated and sidelined as Macbeth acts alone.

🩸
Phase 3: Madness & Retribution (Acts 4-5)

The Inevitable Fall

Macbeth becomes a ruthless tyrant, slaughtering Macduff's innocent family. Lady Macbeth descends into madness, obsessively washing invisible blood from her hands before killing herself. Macbeth faces a rebel army and is finally beheaded by Macduff. Performance focus: Design can express isolation: stark, cold lighting and increased distance between characters show the total destruction of their humanity.
