Themes & Performance Moments
Build acting choices from moments in the prescribed adaptation
Prescribed text: Noughts & Crosses by Malorie Blackman, adapted by Dominic Cooke (Nick Hern Books). Stark Drama uses moment prompts here rather than reproducing an unverified quote bank. Check exact wording in your prescribed script.
AQA question practice: a short performance response
For a short AQA performance question, divide the selected line into meaningful beats. Explain how pitch, pace, tone and facial expression would change, and connect each choice to the character’s intention and the audience’s understanding.
A moment where segregation makes their friendship or relationship feel impossible.
Sephy / Callum
Performance route: Choose the exact line from your Dominic Cooke script, then mark a shift in breath, pace, eye focus or proximity as the social barrier becomes personal. Explain what the audience should understand from that change.
A moment where Callum rejects the way Noughts are labelled or treated and decides he wants change.
Callum
Performance route: Build two contrasting beats. Tightening articulation, posture or stillness can show determination without defaulting to shouting. Use the precise wording from your prescribed edition.
A moment where an adult Cross reinforces the rules and expectations that keep Noughts and Crosses apart.
Kamal / authority
Performance route: Status can come from measured pace, controlled eye line and spatial certainty. Avoid using accent as automatic class shorthand; justify choices from the production world.
A moment where anger about Nought status becomes a reason for harder action.
Jude / group pressure
Performance route: Decide whether pressure is explosive or tightly controlled. Proxemics, pauses and who Jude addresses can reveal whether he is persuading, threatening or recruiting.
A moment where Sephy questions rules that other characters treat as normal.
Sephy
Performance route: Contrast openness or curiosity with the tension around her. Track how another character’s response changes her body, pace or focus.
