Four live-stage moments from Find Me showing family pressure, professional questioning, formal judgement and Verity isolated within the same black-box space.
Use this as a quick mental map of the play’s trajectory. The four stage pictures show how the same small ensemble and chair vocabulary can carry the audience from home pressure to professional scrutiny, formal judgement and Verity’s increasing isolation.

What this task rewards: Episodic Structure

Do not simply retell the story. Find Me is episodic: short incidents accumulate across Verity’s life. OCR describes the action as mainly linear after the opening reveals the ending, with flashbacks; Eduqas also foregrounds the play’s non-linear features. In an answer, identify the exact transition or time shift you are staging rather than claiming the whole structure represents Verity’s state of mind.

The Trajectory of Decline

The opening tells us where Verity’s story will end; the episodes that follow then build much of her journey chronologically, with time shifts and flashbacks. These three phases are a revision map, not divisions named by the script.

🏠
Phase 1: The Domestic Struggle

The Search for Answers

The play opens by announcing the end of Verity’s story, then returns to her childhood and her family’s search for answers. A major turning point is the swimming gala: five performers share Verity’s monologue about how important swimming is to her, but a teacher refuses to let her compete without a cap. Verity becomes rigid and silent; after the blackout we learn that she has destroyed photographs, smashed windows and flooded the bathroom. She is then admitted to hospital.

Phase 2: The Care System

Searching for Suitable Care

After Verity’s first hospital admission, her family repeatedly encounters gaps in suitable provision. She returns home, a social worker cannot offer an appropriate residential placement, and Edward writes to several centres seeking help. Later she enters a halfway house, then a general hospital and a locked geriatric/chronic ward. The episodes give students concrete material for exploring how institutions, professionals and family pressure are staged.

Phase 3: Court & Broadmoor

The Fire and the Final Outcome

While on the locked chronic geriatric ward, Verity sets fire to a waste-paper basket and places Sister Moses’s chair over it. Police and the fire brigade are called. After a hearing at Canterbury Crown Court, Edward and Jean are told that Verity will be admitted to Broadmoor Hospital, a high-security psychiatric hospital. The ending returns to the opening narration and the repeated call to “Find Me”.

Directorial Choice (What) Impact Justification (Why) Key Terminology
To mark a shift between episodes, I would use a sharp percussive sound cue combined with a sudden change in lighting state. The abrupt transition makes the change of time or location legible and keeps the episodic structure visible. Its effect should be justified from the particular moment rather than treated as a diagnosis of Verity. Episodic Structure
