What this task rewards: Designing for Subtext (AO3/AO4)
A design response should go beyond listing historically accurate furniture and explain how the choices communicate Priestley’s social argument. Whether you choose a suffocatingly realistic 1912 Edwardian box set or a sprawling, expressionistic 1945 wasteland, your Set, Costume, Lighting, and Sound must work together to visually dismantle the Birlings' capitalist microcosm.
Set Design
The heavy mahogany table, claustrophobic walls, and the fragile dollhouse.
Costume
Edwardian wealth, restrictive corsets, tailcoats, and the Inspector's timeless mac.
Lighting
The crucial snap from 'pink and intimate' to 'brighter and harder', and interrogative shadows.
Sound
The sharp ring of the doorbell, shattering glass, and the distant echoes of 1945 warfare.
