The Examiner's Focus: Priestley's Explicit Directions

You cannot ignore Priestley's opening stage directions. He explicitly demands that the lighting is "pink and intimate" before the Inspector arrives, and then changes to "brighter and harder". Examiners want to see you confidently name the lanterns (Fresnels, Profiles) and the gel colors (Bastard Amber, Cold White) you would use to execute this exact transition and communicate the shattering of the capitalist microcosm.

Pink & Intimate (Act 1)

Before the Inspector arrives, the stage is bathed in a warm, soft wash using Fresnel lanterns fitted with Bastard Amber or Rose pink gels. This 'rose-tinted' lighting flatters the actors and visually represents their Edwardian complacency, immense wealth, and ignorant insulation from the suffering of the working class.

At the exact moment the doorbell rings, I would program a rapid snap cue, changing the warm Fresnel wash to a blinding, cold white LED state. This abruptly fulfills Priestley's 'brighter and harder' direction. The stark, shadowless wash visually shatters the Birlings' complacent microcosm, signaling to the audience that the family's capitalist sins are about to be harshly exposed to the light of truth.
