Understanding Drama (1hr 45mins | 80 Marks)

The Open Book Trap

AQA allows you to take a clean copy of your set play into the exam. Do not fall into the trap of re-reading the play during the exam or copying out massive chunks of dialogue! The book is only there to help you find a specific quote to back up your performance or design ideas.

Section A: Theatre Roles & Terminology (4 Marks)

Four multiple-choice questions testing your basic knowledge of the theatre industry.

Questions 1 to 4 4 Marks

🧠 Basic Knowledge

What it asks: Identifying stage positions (e.g., Upstage Right), types of staging (e.g., Thrust, In-the-round), or professional roles (e.g., What is the responsibility of the Stage Manager?).

Examiner Secret: You MUST write your answers in the official separate Answer Booklet (e.g., write "01 - A"). If you just circle the answer on the question paper, the examiner will never see it and you will get zero marks! Spend an absolute maximum of 5 minutes on this section and move on.

Section B: Study of a Set Play (44 Marks)

You will answer four questions based on a printed extract from your chosen set text. Notice how the questions "zoom out" from a single design element, to a single line, to the shaded box, and finally to the whole play.

Question 1 4 Marks

🎨 Design Focus

What it asks: How would you design a specific element (set, costume, lighting, or sound) to reflect the context or mood of the extract?

Examiner Secret: Be highly specific with terminology. Don't just say "I would put her in an old dress." Say, "I would design a faded, frayed cotton pinafore in drab grey to reflect her low working-class status and the poverty of the 1980s setting."

Question 2 8 Marks

🎭 Performer Focus (The Single Line)

What it asks: This is a hyper-focused question. The exam paper will highlight a single line (or a very short moment) and ask how you would use your vocal and physical skills to perform it.

Examiner Secret: Do not ramble about the rest of the scene! The secret to getting 8 marks on a single line is to break it down into 2 or 3 different acting beats. Explain how your Vocal skills (pitch, pace, tone) and Physical skills (gesture, posture) shift throughout the delivery of that one specific line to show the character's emotion.

Question 3 12 Marks

🎭 Performer Focus (The Shaded Extract)

What it asks: How would you use your acting skills to demonstrate the character's changing emotions or interactions strictly within the shaded box of the printed extract?

Examiner Secret: AQA is looking for the "shift." The character will always change from the beginning of the shaded extract to the end. Discuss how your use of space (proxemics), physical contact, and eye contact shifts as the tension rises or falls between characters. Do not talk about lines outside the shaded box!

Question 4 20 Marks

🎬 The Extract AND The Whole Play

What it asks: You must explain how you would interpret the character in the printed extract, AND link it to your interpretation of the character across the play as a whole.

Examiner Secret: The most common fatal error is forgetting to talk about the rest of the play! You must show the examiner you understand the character's entire journey (their character arc). You must dedicate a significant portion of your essay to describing how a totally different scene in the play compares or contrasts with the printed extract.

Section C: Live Theatre Production (32 Marks)

You will answer one essay question evaluating a piece of live theatre you have seen.

The Essay 32 Marks

🔍 Describe, Analyze, Evaluate

What it asks: Evaluate how successfully the actors or designers created an impact on the audience during the performance.

Examiner Secret: Do not waste time re-telling the plot of the play; you will get zero marks for it. Pick three specific, 30-second "moments" from the play. Describe exactly what the actor/designer did (using terminology). Analyze what it meant. Evaluate the impact it had on the audience ("This was highly successful because it made the audience feel completely isolated...").
